This person shouldn’t worry so much about the definition or living by whatever ‘real’ definition of a backpacker really is. Just enjoy travelling your way, whatever way that may be. Most people associate backpacking with budget travel in order to define it as the polar opposite of luxury travel but hey, that’s not entirely right since luxury travel can take many forms (to some people, first class is already luxury travel, to others, having your own private airplane is the real luxury travel) and it’s the same for backpacking.
Some retirees enjoy backpacking. I spent some time in the mountains sleeping in a tent on the ground in isolated places; "backpacking" in Europe was a different experience. With tent, sleeping bag, etc. I always carried about 30# and definitely wore some real hiking boots. When carrying only travel needs for Europe I carried 18-20# and wore walking shoes.

- Begpacking combines begging and backpacking in reference to individuals who beg (ask directly or indirectly for money), busk (perform while soliciting money), or vend (sell postcards or other small items) as a way to extend their overseas travel.
- What really matters is what kind of traveler you consider yourself to be, and it’s not my place to judge that!

I miss that part of travel and it’s demise with the start of Hotmail. massive backpack was never going to be a way to travel. Like you said who cares!
Great stuff, brings back so many memories. I was on the “Gringo Trail” (Colombia and Ecuador mainly) back in 1975-76, and then spent nearly a year backpacking in South and Southeast Asia in 1978-1979. No Internet, no phones, no ATMs, occasional letters at Post Restante when in Bangkok or Kuta or Kathmandu; waiting for money transfers from friends and parents at dodgy banks, noteboards in hotels (“Lake Guest House at Samosir Island in Toba has good cheap rooms and good weed”). I’ve spent decades since then working and living (for 11 years) in SE Asia (Indonesia and Philippines) and been in many other places, and the changes are remarkable. My wife and I were just on a scientific expedition on a small ship for a month on the island of South Georgia (near Antarctica) — about as remote as you can get, zero permanent human population — and we still had email and, when weather was kind, ship’s Iridium phone for emergencies.
For many young people in Northern Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Israel, backpacking is a rite of passage. In Canada, it is quite common for gap-year students to visit Europe and Southeast Asia.
A classic backpacker mistake is bringing too much shit on a backpacking trip. We’ve all seen backpackers carrying WAY too much fucking stuff – don’t be one of them, you look like an idiot and getting on public transport is a nightmare. maui motorhome guess I do kind of have a vague definition for “backpackers” in my head (mostly made up of qualities like traveling on smaller budgets and for longer periods of time), but I totally agree with you that there’s no reason to hem in the term.
Buy it for the adventurer in your life and they are sure to be pretty stoked that they have the perfect way to hide their emergency money. Yes, the backpacker in your life probably needs some sort of backpack.
(I gave up and got some wheeled luggage a few years ago. My shoulders and back were bothered by the weight of the backpack.) I can usually tell from the context when people on this helpline talk about "backpacking" they will be sleeping in a bed and not carrying a tent with them. Some I've seen in Europe are carrying enough stuff they may be planning on sleeping out in a tent. read this post here is a form of low-cost, independent travel. It includes the use of public transport; inexpensive lodging such as youth hostels; often a longer duration of the trip when compared with conventional vacations; and typically an interest in meeting locals as well as seeing sights.
